Dr. Xiaochang Wang received his BE in 1982 and ME in 1984 from Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, and PhD in 1992 from Hokkaido University, Japan. He is a professor in environmental science and engineering, and Vice President of Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology. In the university, he is also Leader of the State Key Discipline of Environmental Engineering, Chairman of the Key Laboratory of Northwest Water Resource, Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Education, and Chairman of the Key Laboratory of Environmental Engineering, Shaanxi Province. Outside the university, he acts as Member of the Academic Appraisal Group of Environmental Science and Engineering, the 5th Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Member of the 3rd Expert Consulting Committee, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Board Member of China Urban Water Association, Member of Editorial Board for Journal of Environmental Science, China Water & Wastewater, Water and Wastewater Engineering, Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering in China. Internationally, he is member of International Water Association (IWA), Water Environmental Federation (WEF), American Water Works Association (AWWA) and Japan Water Works Association (JWWA).
　　His research field covers water and wastewater treatment, water reclamation and reuse, risk assessment for water environment etc. He has been the chief researcher for many national key projects supported by NSFC, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Education (MOE), as well as international cooperative projects supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) etc. He has published more than 100 papers in international and domestic journals and is the author of 4 scientific books. He has been awarded 8 patents and the 1st Prize of Science and Technology Award, Shaanxi Province. He has gained the titles of National Excellent Teacher from MOE, National Outstanding Teacher from Chinese Educational Labors Union, Provincial Outstanding Worker from Shaanxi Province.
　　He is internationally active and once chaired the IWA International Conference on Future Urban Wastewater Systems – Decentralization and Reuse, from which selected papers have been published in a special issue of Water Science and Technology. His ideas and work on sustainable and decentralized systems in arid and water deficient areas have drawn international attention.
