The International Water Academy Life Membership Offer Letter
Dr. Wang Baozhen

CHINA PR Oslo, January 31, 2002

Dear Dr. Wang Baozhen,

¡¡¡¡At its meeting, January 31, 2002, the Board of Trustees of The International Water Academy has decided to offer you life membership. The decision is based upon an unanimous recommendation from the Selection Committees and the Admittance Committee of the Academy.
¡¡ The Academy, inaugurated February 17, 1998, is located in Oslo, Norway. It is an all-embracing forum for activities directed towards the peaceful settlement of water-related conflicts, as well as improving the standards of knowledge concerning water. Its long-term objective is to enhance Man's respect for water as an indispensable but finite resource.
¡¡¡¡Members of the Academy are chosen from all realms of experience; scientists, industrialist and diplomats as well as engineers, philosophers and lawyers. The common denominator is their documented knowledge of their particular water-related profession.
¡¡¡¡Membership is for life and is based on the assumption that all members will actively participate in the Academy's work. Such participation may be of varying frequency, but shall, in principle, not be refused by the member on grounds other than inability to perform the task in question. A typical task for an ¡¡¡¡Academician would be to contribute to a Roundtable session addressing a specific project undertaken by the Academy.
¡¡¡¡A Member will remain in active service until the age of 70 when she / he reaches Emeritus status and will not normally be called upon. Membership is not subject to any personal financial contribution. Costs directly attributable to active services requested by the Academy, will be covered by the Academy. Consultancy fees will normally not be paid.
¡¡¡¡The Academy is, by definition, an International Learned Society. Membership will be limited to a maximum number of 500 Academicians, active or emeritii, at any given time.
¡¡¡¡ Please accept our cordial invitation to participate in the endeavour to fairly and peacefully share what is our most critical common resource. Based on your acceptance, this decision will be announced internationally on the Academy Day, February 17.

Yours sincerely,

Tor Wennesland
Secretary General
